ANYONE FEEL LIKE THIS YET?

The Long Rain by Ray Bradbury - A group of astronauts are stranded on Venus, where it rains continually and heavily. the travelers make their way across the Venusian landscape to find a "sun dome", a shelter with a large artificial light source. However, the first sun dome they find has been destroyed by the Venusians. Searching for another sun dome, the characters, one by one, are driven to madness and suicide by the unrelenting rhythm of the rain. At the end of the story, only one sane astronaut remains, and manages to find a functional sun dome.

I just went out, in the rain, to take pictures of everything getting ready to overflow. The above story was all I could think of while I was out. I was gone for about an hour and had my car to get in and out of as I moved along my route. Still, I can see why it would drive somebody to madness. IT IS UNRELENTING! With a rain jacket, wellies, and an umbrella I still got soaked!

I was amazed at just how much water there is out there. We live at the top of a pretty good hill, so we're not having any problems with it but there are people who live awfully close to the river and the lake and I would not be surprised if they were all experiencing some kind of flooding.

Our street is horseshoe-shaped and the Whittenton River runs along it and then passes under it. At one end of the street is Sabbatia Lake which is fairly large and constantly moving, it pinches down to about 20 feet across and goes under a bridge to dump into the Whittenton. As you can see, it's really moving, and those concrete blocks you see just before the water is breaking are usually above the water.

This is the view from the other side of the bridge. Usually we can get down onto those rocks, but the water is so high and moving so fast, I didn't dare take a chance.
Further on down the river is the dam that was getting so much press a couple of years ago. This is what it looks like today.

On the upside, I did notice that there are a lot of buds on the trees!

Then a little further on down the river, near the Reed & Barton factory, there's another fall. In this picture you can see just how hard it's raining too(click on the picture to enlarge).

And if you've never read that story by Bradbury, it comes from a book of short stories called The Illustrated Man. I highly recommend it.

So, five weeks of doing laundry for The Lion King has come to an end. This was by far the best and hardest job of my costume/wardrobe career. Six days a week, eight hours a

day, collecting, sorting, hand- and machine-washing all the underpinnings, and many of the actual costumes, for the entire cast. This was my first union gig and I hope there will be many more. Gregory, Anthony and Gretchen, the wardrobe people who travel with the show were great to work with, thank you! The actors, the ones I got to know anyway, were great and the show was amazing! I didn't see the whole thing, but the parts I did were stunning. I was so taken aback by the costumes and the sets, just beautiful!

This show was the first to book into the Opera House when it reopened in 2002 after extensive renovation. The show was there for almost 8 months, so this was a kind of homecoming for them. Some of these people have been touring with this show for as many as 10 years!

The Opera House is great, but the best part of working on this show was the local wardrobe team. I got to know a lot of really nice people who've been doing this for a long time and I learned a lot! The wardrobe team is the best! Local 775, thank you for the opportunity to work on this show. I look forward to working with you again!

On Sunday, before the last show we were each presented with a diploma from Lion King University (LKU), a VIP ball cap and an LKU t-shirt. It felt like the last night of summer camp and those of you who know me well will not be surprised to hear that I cried. There were lots of hugs and promises to keep in touch, thank you Facebook!

ROCKSTAR?!

As you all know, I have been unemployed since June '09, which means that I've looked at MANY job listings over the last 7 1/2 months. I have found a disturbing trend, everyone wants a rockstar. Many of the postings on Craigslist are looking for Rockstar Administrative Assistant, Rockstar Executive Assistant, Web Application Developer Rockstar, Event Planner and Executor Rockstar, Rockstar PHP Developer, Sales Rockstar, the list goes on and on. How is a professional person supposed to take these listings seriously? Is it not good enough to have ten years of broad experience at a job? And, more importantly, if I apply and am hired, am I expected to dress like a rockstar? I just can't see myself dressing like Pat Benetar, or the girls from Vixen in order to go to work!

But, I DO think if I showed up looking like Joan Jett they'd know I meant business!

JUST KEEP SWIMMING, JUST KEEP SWIMMING

As you know, I started to swim because my knees were bothering me while using the elliptical machine. Well, it's been about a month since then and I have become obsessed with swimming! It's gotten to the point that I'm watching videos of other people swimming on youtube to see how the pros do it. I decided that I needed to make sure that I was swimming properly, and that I remembered the strokes correctly. It has been many, many years since I've had a swim class, so I signed up for Beginner Adult Swim Lessons at the Y and had my first lesson last night. What a difference between swimming on my own, at my own pace, and swimming while somebody is critiquing me and telling me to speed it up! I think I swam 15 laps at the most, some a full stroke, some with a kick-board and some with a thing that I can't remember the name of, between my legs to keep me from kicking. I was whipped by the time I finished! I have some work to do! Also, I need to get a nose plug, I inhaled a lot of water last night.

I've always liked and related to this song. There is one thing about my atheism that I find interesting and a little weird, I love churches. I love highly ornate catholic churches and I love the austere protestant churches. I love store-front iglesias de dios and synagogues. They are all so different and interesting. I suppose it comes from my art history background and being immersed in the symbolism of all that art. The mind reels at all the time and energy and money that went into creating those interiors, the statuary, the sculpted altars, the stained glass, and that's just the inside!

My father's family is catholic, my father was an altar boy almost until the day he married my mother. Needless to say, we were raised catholic. Our church was in Manomet, St Bonaventure's. It was a boring church, none of the archaic or gothic about it. Well except for the priest, Father Higgins. But that's a story for another day. Sometimes my dad would mix it up and take us to St Peter's, the church he grew up in, or to St Mary's out in North Plymouth. I remember those churches being dark and very mysterious.

St Peter's has those magnificent columns and vaulted ceilings while St Mary's was all dark wood inside with a very large (and somewhat creepy) crucifix hanging over the altar. To the right of the altar was a votive offering consisting of red and blue glasses holding candles. You could put an offering in the box and light one for somebody who had died or was sick or just needed a little something extra. And the plaster wall behind these votives was black with the soot from so many years of being lit, over and over again. I loved going to St Mary's, it had an old-world charm about it because the parish was primarily Portuguese and Italian immigrants who worked for the Plymouth Cordage Company.

Alas, times, and the churches with them, have changed. Both St Peter's and St Mary's have become more user-friendly. They have renovated their interiors to be more welcoming and less oppressive. Gone are the dark woods and soot covered walls, and in my opinion, a lot of the mystery.

I started this post to introduce some pictures I took of a greek orthodox church down in Hyannis in July. They have an annual festival and I was excited to be able to see the inside of the church and all the artwork therein. One of the prettiest I've ever seen.

MEMOIRS

I've been taking a memoirs writing workshop with my mom for the last few months. She is a prolific poem writer and wants to get them organized in a coherent manner to make a book for all us kids. I'm her typist, but thought taking it with her would help with my blog writing.

The last assignment was to write about somebody who has made a difference in our lives. I don't even know where to begin with that. I've met a lot of people in my life and most of them have been influential in one way or another. I guess we're supposed to pick the person who has had the greatest impact on us, but there are so many people from whom to choose! Needless to say, I have not even started this assignment, I might never.

I feel that everyone I come into contact with makes some difference in my life, good or not so good. And the not so good probably have some positive affect, even if I'm not immediately, or ever, aware of it. I am one of those people who thinks that everything happens for a reason, so that jerk who cut me off in traffic this morning could have saved my life, but I'll never know! There have been a lot of people I have never met and never will who have impacted my life.

Animals too have had a huge impact on my life. I love my cats like they are my children and I still miss the kitties that have gone on to the giant catnip field in the sky, Windy, Max, Miles, Alec, Winston, all my precious babies. Fish in an aquarium, stray birds and mice I've tried to save, they've all left an imprint, taught me something about myself and the world in which I live. There was one sheep in particular that changed my life forever.

I think maybe that sheep was the most influential, really. She was at the Topsfield Fair being shown in the 4H sheep tent. I squatted down to see her at eye level and pet her. She nuzzled my face and that was it. I decided right then and there that I would stop eating meat.

I had been reading a lot about vegetarianism and the impact livestock farming is having on our planet but hadn't made the final commitment to giving up meat. I had stopped eating meat the previous spring but when I smelled the first cookout of the summer, it was all over. In November of 1988 I stopped eating meat. In December of 1988 I stopped wearing leather and using products that contained animal-derived ingredients. In October of 2009, I finally gave up dairy, eggs and honey. I feel lighter, healthier and happier, knowing that I'm not harming other animals and I'm taking better care of myself.

Becoming vegan is probably the single most important thing I've ever done.

ALMOST WINTER

I went up to the cottage with my mother on Friday. It was very cold and very windy. This is not the time of year we spend much time up there and so I'm always surprised by how barren and gray everything is. We can't see the water from this vantage point in the summer.

I hope the cottage is hibernating and not missing all the people and activity.

After all the rain that Plymouth has had recently, the beach is half gone! It should be back by the time we want to swim.

GOOD KNEES GONE BAD

When I was 11, I was diagnosed with Osgood Schlatter Disease and I was excused from gym class for all of sixth grade. Since then my knees have been a little sketchy. Most of the time they're cool, but every once in awhile, for no apparent reason, they just "go out".

As you know, I've been working out at the Y for a month and I'm loving it. Well, about a week ago my knees started to bother me, the left one especially. One night last week it got so bad I was lying on my bed crying in pain and frustration. I was so worried that, after the progress I've made, I'd have to give up the aerobic workout I have come to LOVE.

I went to my doctor and had some x-rays and found that I have mild arthritis in the left knee and moderate arthritis in the right. I am not surprised by this, it runs in my family. My grandmother was all but crippled by it and my dad had knee replacement surgery a year ago because of it.

For me it's a bit of a catch-22. I have been overweight all my life, which exacerbates the arthritis and when I'm finally doing something about it and actually losing weight, the knees are bad enough that changes must be made to the workout. No more elliptical for me. I have begun to swim.

The Y has a 75 foot long pool with lap lanes available every day, all day. I went for the first time on Thursday thinking it wouldn't be as good and it kicked my ass! I did 5 laps of the crawl and it made me dizzy.

My armpits are sore.

I can't wait to go again tomorrow!

Monday was a gloriously beautiful day. I went for a walk out to Duxbury beach with camera in hand and here are a few of the images I captured.

Today I had my first workout at the Taunton YMCA. It has been 16 years since I belonged to a gym. YIKES!! I have been walking and cycling on and off for those 16 years, but it's not the same as belonging to a gym. I was able to use the elliptical machine for a total of 15 minutes. I burned 190 calories and got my heart rate up to 140. I've got a long way to go.

Last Friday, November 6th was my 48th birthday and I made a birthday resolution. I resolve to change my eating and exercise habits to be as healthy as I can be. I have also challenged myself to lose 100 pounds and stop taking blood pressure medications by my 50th birthday. I have quit drinking coffee and soda. I've been vegetarian for 21 years, so now I'm vegan, having cut out dairy and eggs. I have cut way back on drinking. I have begun to eat whole foods, cutting out as much processed food as possible.

Part of my decision was the health problems I already have, hypertension, 3/4" height loss, recurring foot injuries due to being overweight. The other things that have influenced my decision are two books, Skinny Bitch by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin and The China Study by T. Colin Campbell and Thomas M. Campbell II. Real eye-openers, I highly recommend them.

There was a time when I wanted to live to be 120 years old. I don't so much care about quantity as much as quality now. If I'm to live a long life, it has to be a healthy one. So, here I go.

U2

Amy, Pete, Ian and I went to see U2 at Gillette Stadium on Monday night. I haven't seen U2 since the late 80s and boy, have their shows changed! Of course, I know, it goes without saying. They can fill a stadium of that size and they can afford to have a crazy expensive stage set-up. Their performance, however, is still as great as ever. I'm not the world's biggest U2 fan, but I'll see them live anytime somebody wants to spring for the tickets!

Attending this concert came out of Ian going to see a U2 3-D at the IMAX theater of The New England Aquarium with Amy, Jeff and Lauren. After the movie Ian said to Amy "Now I have to see them live." To which Amy replied "Next time they come, I'll get tickets!" And get tickets she did! She even joined the U2 website so that she could take advantage of presale purchasing. She bought the tickets about 4 or 5 months ago and it was a topic of conversation all summer.

The big night finally arrived and we headed out to Foxboro. The campus of Gillette is HUGE! They have the whole Patriot Place thing going on as well as ample parking. The parking, however, is not free! You must pay $40. to park, which might not have been so bad had we been able to exit the lot after the show in a timely fashion. But no, TWO HOURS just to get out onto route 1. This was one of only two complaints I had with the evening.

Once we got in and found our seats, this is what we were looking at. It's a space ship that took on a life of its own once the show started.

This was the second to last song of the evening, they were about 2/3 through it and some venue staff guy comes up behind me, taps me on the shoulder and tells me if I don't "turn it off and put it away", he'll confiscate my camera. There were at least four other people right in front of me doing the exact same thing, but because I was at the top of the row, I get the shit. If you watch the whole video, you can hear him saying it at the very end.

All in all, I'd have to say it was a GREAT show and I'm so glad we went.

Saturday night was the first of two nights of LEBOWSKIFEST at the House of Blues. Dan, Bridget, Ian, my friend Jon, and I went to the movie portion, Sunday night is the bowling/costume competition portion. There were a few people dressed up in costume but the majority of people were wearing t-shirts with images/lines from the movie on them. I made t-shirts for us to wear, a picture of Lenin saying "I am the walrus". If you haven't seen the movie yet, please rent it, it's hilarious.

Before the movie started, there was an opening band, The Black Diamond Heavies. I did record a song and tried to upload it but Blogger was not cooperating. Click on the link to see it on youtube.

They guys who started Lebowskifest get dressed up as bowling pins and do the intros, they also have a guy dressed as the Dude who travels with them. Not a great picture, but you get the idea.

It was a little bit like seeing the Rocky Horror Picture Show with people yelling lines along with the movie. And, of course, they were piping the sound through the club sound system which was kick-ass! The White Russians were flowing and a good time was had by all.

Next year we're going to the bowling portion, Jon and I are already in costume discussions, can't wait!

CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?

Got a new phone last week. It isn't red, we couldn't find it in red, but still a great phone. I haven't even played with everything it can do, but it's loaded with music for my walks and the sound quality is fantastic! I have a set of earbuds made by iLUV and they're the best I've ever had!

The only problem so far is that I have some homemade ringtones on my old phone that I want to transfer and I was having difficulty doing that. I have since found that the files are Mpegs that need to be converted to QCP files, so I'm going to download a converter and see if that works. If not, I'm stuck with the kooky ringtones on the phone. It won't be horrible, but the tones on the old phone were made by Ian, especially for me. I miss them.

WALK 'N ROLL

In the morning, after dropping Ian at the train, I go for a "power" walk. Swinging arms, handweights, headphones, the whole nine yards. For the longest time I listened to disco because back in the day of aerobics classes that's what we worked out to. Recently though, I've needed something more motivational. After seeing Motley Crue last month, I decided that Metal would do the job.

I have downloaded into my mp3 player Motley Crue, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Cheap Trick, Deep Purple and Motorhead, so far, and those 70 songs took about 4 hours. I still have many, many more songs to go through in our iTunes library. The reason it takes so long to load them in is that I have to listen to each one to see if it has the proper speed to keep me going fast enough.

When I hear the opening guitar on It's a Long Way to the Top or the riff at the beginning of Dr. Feelgood, I can feel the endorphins kick in and it makes me walk harder! It takes all I have to keep from headbanging while I'm walking down the street.

STUDIO ENVY

I have SERIOUS studio envy. I would LOVE to have a room of my own. It would have a dedicated cutting table, a sewing table, shelves for my fabric/notions stash, a place to keep all my yarn, my loom, the spinning wheel, and my dyepots! Ideally, it would be ground-level with a slider out to a concrete slab so that I could do my dyeing right outside and not have to worry about being messy. It would have a big utility sink and a washing machine. Outside, right next to the concrete slab, there would also be a nice clothesline to hang all my dyed projects on for natural drying. Everything would smell so good! AND it would be big enough so that my fiber friends could come and play with me!!!

DAD

Saturday was my Dad's birthday, he would have been 68.

On Sunday morning, the nine of us went to the John Carver Inn, affectionately known in our family as "the hotel", for breakfast and to get ready to scatter Dad's ashes.

After breakfast we headed up to Lout Pond on Billington Street, that's where my Dad did a lot of his growing up. My Mom read a poem she'd written and we each scattered a scoopful of ashes.

Then we headed up to our summer cottage at Long Pond. We got out all the kayaks and the canoe. Mom did more readings and then the "Clough-tilla" (thanks Chris!) went out to the middle of the pond and set him free. We stayed out there for awhile, reminiscing and singing a silly song that Dad used to sing while shaving. When we got back to the beach, we hugged, swam, ate lunch and had hot fudge sundaes in Dad's honor. It was a perfect day and he would have enjoyed it so much.

We all miss you and love you so much Dad.

OUR LITTLE PARADISE

Pollywog College. That's the name of the summer cottage that my mom and uncle own. It was named Pollywog Cottage, but my aunt called it college as a little girl and the name stuck. My grandfather bought it when my mother was a little girl and there hasn't been a summer in my life that I haven't been up there. It's on Long Pond in Plymouth and is heaven on earth.

The deck, on the front, overlooks the pond, but there is enough shrubby stuff in front of it to keep it private.

The beach from the end of the dock. From year to year we don't know how much beach we'll have. The winter snow can sometimes take it all away. There have been summers where we've had to put the dock up right at the end of the stairs down from the cottage.

We're on a cove, protected, but we still get to see some very cool action in the sky and the sun sets directly across from our beach. Nothing like sitting on the beach with a cold drink, watching the sun go down.

The flag on the screen is covering a hole to keep the mosquitoes out.

The oar is from a row boat that is long gone, but was really cool. It was big and felt like the shallop at the Mayflower.

Irises all over the place, beautiful when they're all open.

I consider myself to be incredibly fortunate to have had this place in my life and to be able to share it with so many friends.

My mother and I drove down to the cape on Saturday to see my brother and his band play at the Barnstable Fair. His band is called The Atlantic Ave Band and they do a mix of covers. Neither one of us had seen them play, so we were psyched to be going.

My sentiments exactly! And it has nothing to do with being married to a bass player.

So, this was the weekend of the car show! On Saturday we went out on the bike to see Paul and Teri at the grand opening of Teri's new Arts Center in Quincy.

Their boys Jake and Nick came out to check out the bike, and of course, try it out. After our visit with the Mangiarattis, we hit the road for Brookline and the Larz Anderson Auto Museum for Micro/Mini Car Day. This museum has a permanent collection located in a converted carriage house but they also host events on their sprawling lawn over the course of the non-snowy months.

When we got there and got off the bike the first thing we saw was one of Ian's favorite motorcycles, with a sidecar no less. It's a Ural from Russia.

As all the cars were tiny, I appear as a giantess, doing my best Carol Marol. Hitched to the back of this car is the tiniest camper I've ever seen.

Inside the carriage house is the permanent collection. I thought it very cool that each car had a mannequin dressed in the style of the day. This is a 1957 Corvette, 'vettes are my favorite car. If I had the money, that's what I'd get!

The museum houses cars that were actually owned by Larz Anderson. This is a shot of his limo from the early 20th century. It has all mod cons!

And then there is a garage set up so you can see what it was like back in the day. They have some cars "in for repairs" all the tools, etc. that you'd need.

On Sunday, we hopped on the bike again and headed out to Dedham for The Bay State Antique Auto Club’s 38th Annual Antique Car Show. Touted to have over 1000 cars participating, how could we pass it up?!?

A couple of weeks ago my mother and I went to Salem with my cousin Sue and two of her three kids, Andrew and Ivy. We had a great time visiting the Witch Museum and the House of the Seven Gables.

Andrew is telling my mom a story, I can't even remember what it was about, but he is one funny kid. He has inherited his father's subtle sense of humor.

I love to see her laugh.

Hello folks, sorry I've been away for so long. Life has been very hectic for the last few weeks and now all that "business" is done with, I've got some time to be creative! Here are some pictures I took on Father's Day at my in-laws, in the rain.

These daisies are conversing about the rain, because EVERYBODY is!

If you click on this rose and make it bigger, you can see me in the large water drop in the center.

Thes coral-colored roses are my favorite. They smell the sweetest and they remind me of my grandfather, an avid gardener who loved roses. In the summer he'd cut a large one and put it in a bowl of water on the diningroom table, you could smell it through the whole house and it was just lovely.

I have been doing a lot of reminiscing of late. Summer was always the time of year that my extended family spent the most time together. Both sets of grandparents had homes on ponds so we always looked forward to visiting with them and all our cousins. Cookouts, swimming, playing in the front yard or on the beach, fond memories that I am so thankful for.

PLYMOUTH CORDAGE COMPANY

I went down to the old cordage buildings today to poke around. My grandfather worked there as a chemist and then as an administrator for many years. My mom's family lived in one of the big houses on Holmes Terrace. We've established that I love old, worn-out buildings, and I love my family, so this place has a double attraction for me.

This sign is out where the public can still see it.

This building (and I don't even know how many more just like it) is sided with painted metal shingles. The peeling and rusting give it a really cool texture.

I'm not sure what's going on here, but it made me think of a surrealist painting.

Smokestacks are creepy. And these windows are all glassless.

Always going to find graffiti on abandoned buildings, most of it was a waste of time, but I thought this was funny.

There were train tracks here back in the day, but these aren't original. These are part of the commuter rail station that now resides at the back of the cordage.

I don't know what you call this, it's a guide for a big sliding door.

I couldn't get any closer to these buildings, but I really wanted to. There is a marina in the same area and you can't get in without a password for the keypad.

Wonder what those doors are for.

The tallest building in Plymouth? So the historical site says, six stories.

It was a beautiful day and I could have stayed there for hours snapping away. I'm going back, to see if I can get into any of the empty buildings. Don't tell anyone!

REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES

Last night I went to the Museum of Fine Arts with my niece, Ellie. We drove in, got a parking space right behind Wentworth (a major coup) and walked over behind the School for the Museum of Fine Arts. Outside the main entrance is a rhino sculpture done by Katherine Ward Lane Weems, a former student, c. 1937. This rhino, whose sisters flank the Harvard bio labs, was based on a female rhino in the Bronx Zoo, but with the measurements of the largest recorded specimen. This is a huge sculpture, which means the real rhino was YIKES!

After getting in, we started to look around and decided to go check out the modern art gallery. Modern is my favorite era so I was really looking forward to it. We were looking at works over by a Matisse painting, in front of which there were three twenty-somethings (top) discussing the model in the painting, Reclining Nude, 1925 (bottom). They were disgusted by how FAT she was! I was, and am still, astounded by this. They completely missed the point of the painting and sounded, well, STUPID!

The lovely and talented Ellie wanted to go and see her favorite RENOIR (Monet, i can't believe I wrote Monet!), so we trekked up to the 19th-century rooms to have a look-see. She says she could look at it forever, so here she is, frozen in time, looking at it forever! Neither Monet<>

After looking at everything we wanted to see inside, we went into the gift store, where Ellie purchased the poor person's art, postcards! I procured a copy of a photography book I was looking for, The Photographer's Eye by John Szarkowski. Not only am I trying to learn how to use my new camera and taking a lot of pictures, I'm reading about theory and looking at the work of others. It has been very interesting. Of course, looking at old work and the quality of the photos makes me want to learn how to use a film camera now. Oh well, as my friend Jill says, in for a penny, in for a pound!

The art doesn't end after you've exited the building. Among the pieces outside, there are two giant baby heads by Antonio Lopez Garcia that are so cool! I love these baby heads! They remind me of a certain little girl who lives in Middleboro.

And here we have a photo of the Zen garden which was closed by the time we got there. I had to sneak the camera through the fence while Ellie held the branches back to get this secret shot. I love the Zen garden; it's so peaceful even though it's in the middle of the bustling fenway.

So, over the weekend, we needed to replace the toilet in the cottage.

It had cracked all over one side and who knows how long ago it happened. What we thought was sweating was actually leaking.

Needless to say, the floor underneath was rotted too.

Some random photos from over the last week, a few tidbits of my day-to-day.

Sunday was the college graduation of my cousin, Hillary. At the party afterwards, my Auntie Sheila Darling was wanting to know about Ian's facial hair. What is that soul patch anyway? Rock 'n Roll!

On Thursday we went to a classic car show at Patriot Place in Foxboro. I couldn't believe how many really cool cars were there! This is a 1964 Plymouth Valiant Barracuda, hands down one of the coolest cars there. If I could have driven one away that night, this would have been it!
This is a fern growing INSIDE a cellar window of the building in which I work. There are also some kind of critters living in my suspended ceiling and there might be a gopher living in the wall. Fun place!

On Friday I went to visit my friend Jill, it was so nice to see her and all her crazy kids! She's just recently acquired 4 chickens and we were down checking out the pen when we discovered that one of them is probably a rooster! These lovely irises are from her yard and I thought they looked nice with my buddhas and Ian's photo.

Friday night was band practice for Colossus at the really cool home of Kendra and Eric. While the boys played and Kendra created, I went to see Angels and Demons. All I can say is wait for it to come out on dvd. After the movie, I suggested to Eric that it was a beautiful night and perfect for a fire, so he built one! Here's Ian keeping warm and listening as Eric regales us with stories of his job. Eric is one of the best and funniest story tellers EVER!

Last weekend we took a motorcycle ride out to the DeCordova Museum. They have an incredible sculpture garden, so cool that we didn't even make it inside!

This is the coolest ticket booth I've ever seen! You drive up to it, pay, and then park. Since we were on the bike and we get in free with the Museum Reciprocity program, I had to wait behind cars and walk up. The attendant said "I guess Plimoth Plantation qualifies as a museum." Philistine.

I love these sprawling pieces. Donut with Three Balls, by Fletcher Benton.

This piece, Butterfly Effect, is by Rick Brown, a professor at MassArt, my alma mater.

Ian and I are in love with weeping trees. My favorite is the weeping willow, he's rather enamored of the weeping beech, pictured here dwarfing him. The sculpture on the left is called Ence Pence and it's by Ursula von Rydingsvard. It reminds me of the sculptures on Easter Island.

I am slightly obsessed with cemeteries. I love to walk through graveyards and read the headstones. I love the verses, the details, the confidence that they were going to heaven, back to god.

These pictures were taken in Mansfield and show what happens to all the lovely decorations that the living bestow upon the dead for the holidays. It was a pile of trash, not well hidden, full of wreaths, plastic flowers, stuffed animals, dead plants, and more than a few fast-food containers.

I've been interested in death rituals for a long time; the way we deal with death, our fear of it, and the afterlife. Personally, though I miss my loved ones who have died, I think it's the next great adventure. Or, it's nothingness, I can't decide. Fortunately, I don't have to decide, there is nothing I can do to stop it, so I've decided to embrace it. I just hope I don't have to embrace it for a long, long time. I'm having way too much fun here!

ROADSIDE SHRINES

Am I the only person who finds these roadside shrines a little over the top? I am fascinated by them, and yet I find them incredibly annoying. I can certainly empathize with the bereaved, but I feel this type of display is disrespectful to the dearly departed.

ALBANY VISITORS and TRICIA LEARNS TO SPIN

Last Friday I got an email from my cousin in Albany saying that friends of hers would be visiting the plantation and could they come up and see me in my wardrobe lair. Later that afternoon, Amy McCarthy came up with her two daughters, Kate (11) and Maddy (10). As there was an embroidery session going on, Tricia asked them if they'd like to sew on some of the paillettes (aka sequins). They were most enthusiastic and jumped right in!

Next, Maddy takes over and is complimented by Tricia on her hand-eye coordination.

Here we have Amy taking a stab at it. They all did a great job.

Here, the girls are checking out a new project by fiber-artist extraordinaire, Carli. It's an embroidered, stuffed sheep. Not fabric with embroidery on it, but a sheep constructed from embroidery stitches. Carli never ceases to amaze us with what she's created between sessions in the colonial wardrobe.

Earlier in the day, Tricia decided she wanted to see what it would be like to make the gilt sylke twist embroidery thread on a spinning wheel, the way it would probably have been done in the 17th century. Of course that meant she had to learn to spin, which she did in less than five minutes. Is there anything she can't do!?!?

TREASURES

Carolyn Crowell, who is a long-time volunteer in the colonial wardrobe department, lives in her ancestral home in Sandwich, Massachusetts. Over the years she has been kind enough to share with us the treasures she finds stored away in her house. These pictures are of some tiny shoes, each pair about 4" from toe to heel and a pair of mittens with the same proportions. She gave me permission to photograph them and now I'm sharing them with you.
This first pair is made from velvet and embroidered all over with a simple satin stitch pattern. They are hand sewn, I could just make out the stitching on the insole. My guess is they were crib shoes, or never worn, as the soles are in perfect condition.

This pair is machine made, leather with little glass (?) buttons. The soles are in good shape but the toes are scuffed to the point of the leather being worn away. Lots of crawling done in these!

This little pair of mocs were hand stitched with teeny tiny itty bitty stitches. The material is chamois, so soft. They are decorated with buttonhole stitch and feather (?) stitch. The ribbon for the tie is held down with herringbone stitch and it can be pulled like a drawstring.

And then we have tiny mittens. They look as though they are made from silk, they have that sheen, and knit on 0000 needles. They are in amazing condition and have what looks to be knitted lace for cuffs. What a treat to see the things she finds in her house, thank you Carolyn!

The land on which Plimoth Plantation was built once belonged to the Hornblower Family and was donated in order that the museum could be built. There are a lot of buildings we use that are original to the estate, but there is one little building that is hidden away in the woods and isn't seen by the public.

You can just make out the palisade around the fort

PATER MAGNOLIA

My parents have a rather large magnolia tree
at the end of their driveway. When it's in
full bloom it's quite spectacular.

My dad loved this tree and the fact that it
was so substantial.

Dad loved flowers. He wasn't really a planned
garden kind of guy, he loved to have buckets
of stuff here and patches of stuff there.

The yard always looked nice and he worked his

tail off to get grass to grow. My whole life, grass

was a challenge for him, a challenge that he rose

to with gusto!

The pine trees are protection against the wind.

It comes whipping up the ramp from the plantation
highway and without those trees, my parent's

would have no yard!

But they also protect the magnolia and it has
been able to thrive because of them.

Seventh Room had a great gig at Patriot Place,
an enormous shopping and dining extravaganza
at Gillette Stadium. An outdoor, free, all-ages
show, it was fantastic! The weather, as you
can see, was spectacular!

IVY'S DAY

Thursday, April 23rd, was Bring your Daughters
and Sons to Work Day. I have a second cousin
once removed who is 11 years old and a budding
fashion/costume designer who came to work
with me to check it out.

Down in the village for morning meeting,
introduced to the village people and getting the
lay of the land.

Beginning her project, to completely hand sew
a woman's coif. The coif is a head garment to
keep a woman's hair covered for modesty.

Although she doesn't usually do much hand
sewing, she picked up the techniques quickly.
Love those young minds/hands, like sponges
they are!

A sewing bee with Auntie Betty, who comes over

to volunteer in the colonial wardrobe with us.

Very impressed with her all-access-pass! We

took the secret pathway down to the village.

Ivy took her coif home to continue to work on

it and when it's finished I'll post pictures. We're

already making plans to have her come back

again over the summer for another volunteer

My Grandmother was a very talented woman.
Not only was she a good cook, she could sew
anything, and I mean ANYTHING. She was also a potter.
She didn't throw on the wheel, she was a hand-builder
and she sold her wares at Plymouth Pottery, run by
Miss Alden, last of THE Alden line, so I was told.
Plymouth Pottery was located in the Sparrow House
on Summer Street. Part of the house is a 17th-
century historical site, and part of it is an art
and fine craft gallery.

One of the things she made a lot of were
Plymouth Rocks. She had one in cast iron that
she made a mold from and then made ceramic
versions to sell in the store. It was a big hit!
My aunt gave me the mold and my friend
Kendra, also a gifted artist, recently made me
a few.

A couple of weeks ago, Ian and I were browsing

through an antique mall in New Bedford and

came across a wall hanging with a sticker on it

that said Plymouth Pottery. I picked it up and

turned it over and there was my gramma's

scratched in name and date! It was oddly exciting

that I found one of her pieces in an antique store.

1977, I was a sophomore/junior in high school.

I guess that makes me an antique too!
